Es la única palmera nativa de Chile continental y llega a medir 30 metros de altura. Su tronco es recto, columnar, liso y grisáceo, de hasta un metro de diámetro, el cual se angosta en la parte superior de los individuos más longevos. Originalmente formaba densos palmares entre las provincias del Elqui y Talca.
