Las semillas de Ginkgo biloba permiten identificar el género (sexo) de la planta. Son mucho más abundantes las semillas femeninas. Sólo los árboles femeninos dan frutos. Las semillas masculinas tienen 3 valvas (Ver imagen de la izquierda de la fotografía). Las semillas femeninas tienen 2 valvas (Ver las dos semillas a la derecha de la imagen. Muchos de los retoños fueron traídos a la Rep. Argentina por el Buque Escuela Crucero "LA ARGENTINA" y fueron donados por el Emperador Japonés Hiroito.
