Hasta hace poco, considerado junto a Cyanopica cyanus, con poblaciones solo en China oriental, España y Portugal. Se creía que las poblaciones ibéricas serían introducidas después de la Edad Media, por viajeros. Pero el registro fósil, y estudios de ADN, demostraron un orígen más antiguo en las poblaciones ibéricas, y después fue separada en otra especie: C. cooki, endémica de España y Portugal.
