El lugar de la observación, Monad Shoal, es un monte submarino, su cima está a unos 28 ó 30 metros bajo el nivel del mar. Esta especie vive en profundidades de -600 a -1500 metros. Pero suben a la cima de este monte submarino, cada madrugada unos minutos, para ser limpiados y desparasitados por un par de especies de peces limpiadores, que tienen aquí una especie de "Estación de Servicio y Limpieza".
