Se diferencia de Astylus atromaculatus por poseer el pronoto todo negro, en vez de tenerlo más bien gris con dos marcas oscuras. Aparte de eso, por la distribución, pues Astylus atromaculatus no está siquiera presente en Brasil, al tener una distribución más hacia el sur-oeste que Astylus variegatus, que se distribuye por Brasil y en el norte de Argentina.
