A new species of Scytalopus has been described for southern Brazil and Misiones, Argentina, called Scytalopus pachecoi (Maurício, 2005), making S. speluncae endemic to Brazil.

S. pachecoi went unnoticed for a long time, and the separation is based on differences in vocalization (the frequency of note emissions in its song vocalization, different contact calls), distinct plumage in its life stages, and sympatry, as both species coexist in southern Brazil.
