Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Near Threatened

Description: Light gray crown and back, black wings with a white wing band, black tail, darker brown ventral side with a brown throat and rump. The female is olive green dorsally, contrasting with the lighter ventral side, indistinguishable from most females of other Sporophila species.

Geographic Distribution within Argentina: Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Santa Fé, Entre Ríos, and Buenos Aires.

Habitat: Grasslands.

Feeding: Seeds.

Behavior: Territorial. Melodious song composed of several sweet whistles very pleasant to the ear.

Nesting: Semi-spherical nest, made of delicate plant material.
