Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Synonyms: Machetornis rixosus, Tyrannus rixosus.

Subspecies:

Description: A medium-sized, slender flycatcher with bright yellow underparts and soft brownish tones on the upperparts. The head shows a subtle gray wash, sometimes with a faint pale patch that is not easily visible at a distance. It often adopts an upright stance, perching on exposed structures. The bill is short, dark, and sturdy, suited for seizing active prey, while the rounded wings and moderately long tail give it a balanced, streamlined profile. Overall, it displays the clean, contrasting look typical of open-country tyrant flycatchers.

Geographical distribution: Widespread in South America, ranging from the southern Amazon and north-central regions down to central-eastern Argentina, and also present in Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Bolivia. It occurs continuously throughout tropical and subtropical zones, extending into temperate areas where open environments remain available.

Habitat: Occupies diverse open habitats, including natural grasslands, savannas, rural landscapes, roadsides, wetland edges, and even urbanized zones. Frequently associates with livestock, vehicles, or isolated structures that provide elevated perches essential for its foraging technique. It avoids dense forests but may use forest edges and degraded clearings.

Diet: Primarily insectivorous, feeding on medium to large insects captured in short, agile sallies from perches. It often pursues prey flushed by livestock, taking advantage of animals’ movement to detect insects. Occasionally consumes other arthropods or small vertebrates, reflecting a flexible feeding strategy according to local conditions.

Behavior: An active and alert species, frequently shifting between perches. Its most distinctive behavior is following livestock, which helps it locate disturbed insects. It flies with steady, direct wingbeats alternating with brief glides. Pairs or small groups are common, usually keeping watch from posts, fences, or rooftops.

Breeding: Builds a domed nest of fine plant fibers, roots, and assorted materials, placed in trees, human structures, or sometimes inside abandoned nests of other species. The typical clutch consists of two to three eggs, incubated by both adults. Young are fed regularly with prey captured during short flights around the nesting territory.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Least Concern, with stable populations and a broad distribution. Its ability to adapt to modified landscapes and coexist with rural activity has supported its persistence across much of its range.
