Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Small and slender beak, with notable individual variability. Adult males with black plumage, during breeding plumage they have a black beak, while at rest, it is orange. Dark-colored legs. Females and juveniles have a simple design, with a gray-brown back with ochre edges, short ochre eyebrows, a grayish ventral area generally with strong dark gray or brown streaking, although it is highly variable, and some individuals may have a slight pectoral marking. Juveniles have pale beaks. Monotypic.

The most abundant species with the greatest adaptability, which occupies a niche similar to that of a Sparrow (Passer domesticus) in towns, but without abandoning natural environments. It can be seen in various and diverse habitats. It can be seen feeding on cacti or trees, the behavior is not exclusive, so it is very important to analyze its field marks.

Geographic Distribution: All Galápagos Islands excluding Darwin, Wolf, and Genovesa (BirdLife International, 2023).
