Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description: It is the smallest falcon and one of the most familiar raptors in the Americas, with a slender body, pointed wings, and a relatively long tail. It shows marked sexual dimorphism, with males displaying rufous backs, blue-gray wings, and a pale head with two distinct black facial stripes, while females are larger and mostly brown with heavy barring. The underparts are pale with dark spotting, and the bill is short and strongly hooked.

Geographic distribution: It ranges widely from Alaska and Canada to southern South America, occupying nearly the entire American continent. In Argentina, it is found across most regions, with both resident and migratory populations depending on latitude.

Habitat: It inhabits a wide variety of open habitats, including grasslands, farmland, savannas, rural areas, suburban environments, and forest edges. It is commonly seen perched on wires, poles, or isolated trees while scanning for prey.

Feeding: The diet is diverse and opportunistic, consisting mainly of large insects, such as grasshoppers and beetles, but also small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and small birds. Prey composition varies seasonally and geographically.

Behavior: This species is active and territorial, often observed making short, direct flights from a perch. It hunts both by perch-and-pounce and by hovering in midair, rapidly beating its wings. Outside the breeding season, it is usually solitary.

Nesting: It nests in cavities, either natural or artificial, including tree holes, cliffs, buildings, or nest boxes. No true nest is built, and eggs are laid directly on the substrate. The clutch typically consists of 3 to 5 eggs, incubated mainly by the female, while the male provides food.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern, with large and widespread populations. Nevertheless, local declines have been documented in some areas, linked to habitat loss and pesticide exposure.
