En invierno y principios de primavera se puede ver a los juveniles, aún de negro y rojo. Al acercarse la época de calor, cambian sus hábitos y varias veces durante todo este tiempo, cambian la piel (que es en realidad su esqueleto) para poder aumentar su tamaño. Recién en el último de estos cambios, llamados mudas, se manifiestan las diferencias de color entre sexos. Los machos conservan sus colores negro y rojo predominantes mientras que las hembras cambian radicalmente su aspecto al madurar.
