Nueva actualización taxonómica, se comienza a reconocer como especie plena a Myiodynastes hemichrysus dentro de la base de datos de EcoRegistros, siguiendo a BirdLife International (2017) y Mobley (2017). Algunos autores la consideran subespecie de M. chrysocephalus.

Mobley (2017) comenta: Previously considered conspecific with M. chrysocephalus, and the two are sister-taxa, based on morphological characters and all molecular analyses. Races minor and cinerascens here transferred from M. chrysocephalusbecause their dawn songs (repeated “kweee!-tee-tu”) and daytime songs (strident “skeeeuw!”) are identical to those of present species and very different (scores of 3 for each) from those of chrysocephalus (respectively “kwee!-tlu-tee” and “ku-weet!.. weet!”, the “weet!” sharply rising and much higher-pitched than first note); M. chrysocephalus also has a longer wing and tail (at least 1) with much buffier and more restricted rufous edges to the tail (1). Three subspecies recognized.

En palabras más simples: la población del Benteveo de Barbijo (Myiodynastes chrysocephalus) que habitaba en la mayoría de los países del oeste de Sudamérica y parte de Centroamérica se dividió en dos especies, quedando el Benteveo de Barbijo (Myiodynastes chrysocephalus) desde parte de Perú hacia el sur, y el Benteveo Vientridorado (Myiodynastes hemichrysus) desde el norte de Perú, hacia el norte.
