Officially recognized as a full species in López-Lanús et al. (2013), where they call it Sporophila sp. nov., noting that its description is pending publication by Di Giacomo et al. (in press). It was later described in López-Lanús (2015) and Di Giacomo and Kopuchian (2016).

It remains as the main name on the site: Sporophila iberaensis as it is the most widely spread, but both names are correct for now and are considered synonyms: Sporophila iberaensis and Sporophila digiacomoorum.
