Sometimes placed in genus Dytes. Hitherto considered conspecific with P. occipitalis, but breeding bird differs by its white vs grey throat and black vs grey forehead (3); shorter gold-stained blackish ear-tufts vs large golden-rosette ear-tufts(2); darker colour of upperparts (ns[1]); narrower black area down hindneck and nape (2); sedentary vs migratory behaviour, with non-breeding plumage (2); and higher-pitched voice (1). Also closely related to P. nigricollis, †P. andinus and P. taczanowskii..
